Three Bahamas, three different trips

"The Bahamas" is not one place. It is a scattered nation of islands and cays, and the island group you choose shapes your days more than almost any resort amenity. Here is how Nassau and Paradise Island, the Exumas, and Eleuthera with Harbour Island actually differ for couples, families and travelers who want a little adventure.

Compare the island groups
01

Start with the island group, not the resort

Most first-time Bahamas planning starts with a resort photo and works backwards. We suggest the reverse. Each island group has its own pace, its own way of getting around, and its own trade-off between convenience and seclusion. Once you know which of those trade-offs you are happy to make, the resort shortlist gets very short, very quickly.

These three island groups offer very different trips. We compare their character and logistics rather than rank them: the right choice depends on what you want an ordinary holiday day to feel like. This is a destination guide, not a claim that Sandals or Beaches operates on every island. If a Sandals or Beaches stay is your priority, use the automated resort match to compare actual properties.

Nassau & Paradise Island

The connected hub
Character
The busiest, most developed part of the country, on and around New Providence. Restaurants, shopping, history in downtown Nassau and large resort complexes sit close together. Cable Beach, west of downtown, is a long hotel-lined stretch of sand.
Best fit
Couples on a shorter trip who want minimal travel time; families who value choice and easy outings; anyone who likes the option of leaving the resort for an evening.
Adventure angle
Boat days, snorkeling and island-hopping excursions typically depart from here, so you can sample the outer islands as a day trip rather than a base.
Trade-off
It is rarely the place for genuine solitude. Expect activity, cruise-day crowds in town and a more urban backdrop than the outer islands.

The Exumas

Cays and clear water
Character
A long chain of cays strung across shallow, vividly coloured water. Life here centres on the sea: sandbars, small uninhabited cays and boat excursions are the headline, rather than nightlife or shopping.
Best fit
Couples who want water, boats and quiet evenings; families with confident swimmers who will genuinely use marine excursions.
Adventure angle
Strongest of the three for days on the water. Plan excursions around weather and sea conditions rather than a fixed calendar.
Trade-off
Fewer flight options and fewer dining choices outside your resort. Getting around usually means boats, taxis or a rental car rather than walking.

Eleuthera & Harbour Island

Long, quiet and characterful
Character
Eleuthera is long and narrow, with the Atlantic on one side and calmer water on the other; the Glass Window Bridge marks a point where the two nearly meet. Harbour Island, just offshore, is small and walkable and known for its Pink Sands Beach.
Best fit
Independent-minded couples who like boutique stays and exploring by car or golf cart; families comfortable without big-resort infrastructure.
Adventure angle
Driving the island, finding beaches and coves, and small-town wandering. Self-directed rather than packaged.
Trade-off
There is no Sandals or Beaches resort here, so it suits travelers open to independent hotels. Transfers often combine a flight, a taxi and a short water taxi.

Sandals Bahamas Nassau: what the name change means

The adults-only Sandals resort on Cable Beach is now called Sandals Bahamas Nassau. Many travelers, reviews and older articles still use its former name, Sandals Royal Bahamian. They refer to the same property, which matters when you are reading opinions online: older comments may describe rooms or venues that have since changed.

Its distinctive feature is Barefoot Cay, a small private offshore island reached by a short boat ride. For couples, that offers something unusual for a Nassau-area stay: a quieter second setting without changing hotels. Whether it shapes your trip depends on how you want to spend your days, and on current boat schedules and access rules, which the resort sets.

Being on Cable Beach also means you are close to the rest of New Providence. That is the appeal for some couples and a reason others prefer an outer island.

04

Beaches Exuma: planned, not yet open

Beaches has announced plans to convert Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma into a family resort, Beaches Exuma, with family-oriented facilities. It is a genuinely interesting prospect, because it would put a family all-inclusive in the Exumas for the first time in the brand's lineup.

But as of this draft it is planned, not open, and not bookable, and no fixed opening date has been confirmed. Generic booking tools on supplier sites do not mean Exuma inventory exists. If you are planning a family trip now, compare current open Beaches resorts instead, and treat Exuma as one to watch.

Note

Do not plan travel dates, deposits or a celebration around an unopened resort. When an opening is officially confirmed, CHR will update this guide. Read our existing Beaches Exuma overview and compare current Beaches family resorts.

05

Getting there: the shape of the journey

General logistics only. Airlines, routes and schedules change; check them for your own dates.

Nassau & Paradise Island: Most visitors fly into Nassau's international airport, the country's main gateway. Cable Beach is a short road transfer away, which makes it the simplest arrival of the three.

The Exumas: Expect either a direct flight to Great Exuma where offered from your departure city, or a connection, often via Nassau. Then a road transfer, and possibly a boat if you are staying on a cay.

Eleuthera & Harbour Island: Several small airports serve the island. Reaching Harbour Island usually means flying to North Eleuthera, a short taxi to the dock, then a water taxi across.

Transfer reality check

  • Count every leg: flight, connection, road, boat.
  • Ask what happens if a connection runs late and you miss the last small flight or boat.
  • On short trips, a simpler arrival can be worth more than a prettier beach.
  • Pack light for small aircraft and water taxis.

Your Bahamas decision checklist

Tap to tick. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

  • Pace: do we want evenings out, or evenings in?
  • Trip length: are there enough nights to justify an outer-island connection?
  • Water: will we actually spend days on boats, or mostly at the pool and beach?
  • Who is coming: adults-only couple, or children who need family facilities that are open now?
  • Brand fit: are we set on all-inclusive, or open to independent hotels on Eleuthera or Harbour Island?
  • Reconfirm: resort names, room category details and operating policies for our exact dates.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Sandals Royal Bahamian still open?

The Cable Beach property now operates under the name Sandals Bahamas Nassau. Sandals Royal Bahamian was its former name, so older reviews and articles using that name are describing the same resort, possibly before later changes.

Can we book Beaches Exuma for a family trip?

Not at the time of writing. Beaches Exuma has been announced as a planned conversion of Sandals Emerald Bay, with no confirmed opening date and no bookable inventory. For a family trip now, compare the Beaches resorts that are currently operating.

Which island group is best for a first visit?

For many first-timers, Nassau and Paradise Island are the most forgiving: the simplest arrival, the most dining and excursion choice, and easy day trips toward the cays. If water and quiet matter more than convenience, the Exumas reward a longer stay.

Is Barefoot Cay a separate resort?

No. It is a small offshore island associated with Sandals Bahamas Nassau, reached by a short boat ride. Access arrangements, schedules and what is offered there are set by the resort and should be confirmed for your dates.

Are Eleuthera and Harbour Island good for honeymoons?

They can be, for couples who prefer boutique hotels, exploring by car or golf cart, and a slower small-island pace. There is no Sandals resort there, so it suits couples comfortable planning outside the all-inclusive model.
